While making this piece I didn't master a technique but I did get more practice on understanding how to draw cartoon people. I drew one of the people at a side view which I hadn't done before so I also learned how to adjust the lines to show a side view. I struggled to make each body part proportional, especially on the arms. It was hard to understand what length to make them when they were in different positions. I didn't focus on any specific artists while making this piece, but I have always liked the style of drawing in the TV show Daria and reflecting on making this piece I think I had the characters in mind when drawing this. I think this show came to mind because it is about being in high school and I was trying to make the people I drew look like teenagers. As I drew this piece I wasn't originally planning to add the marker around the two girls or the red paper around that. But I decided to add these to elements because I wanted to emphasize the people. I also thought this addition balanced the piece since the two girls were not the only part. I decided to make the lines surrounding the girls curve because I wanted it to look as if they were in a vortex. If I could of I would of liked to add more layers of paper to the outside to add more texture and dimension to the piece. Also I would of used a different pen to outline the two people because the pen I used bled too much. This piece connects to my other in which I used paper to make texture. This also can connect to my pieces through my theme because it represents a stage in life of being young which is a step to finding your place. |

In this piece I learned how to separate water color into sections as well as make different textures with watercolor. I struggled with keeping the sections completely separate as well as an equal size, but I eventually decided to use tape to keep each panel separate. While making this piece I mastered how to combine contrasting colors and how to blend them without mixing them completely. I drew inspiration from the author of the poem, Amy Downpert, because each box of color is meant to represent one of the six stanzas. Reading about the meaning of the poem I learned about how it represents the feelings of struggling with mental health. While making the piece I got another view of how that struggle affects other people. How people can fall in and out of depression and the struggle of having extreme changes in mood. I originally was planning to use oil pastels to make each box but they did not blend in the way I wanted them to. I then decided to use watercolor because I could create more value with it and blend the shades of paint better. I also decided to put the boxes in uniform rows because when I put the boxes in a random placement it made it hard to follow the poem and understand the movement within the piece.I also thought it would be interesting to structure the piece of art so rigidly in contrast to the meaning behind referencing unpredictable change. I would of chosen to use a finer tip pen when writing out the words under each box, I think this would of made the lines more clear and also would just look more pleasing over all. Also using a finer tip pen would of allowed me to place the lines closer together which I would've liked to have done. This piece links with my other pieces because it addresses change and movement within life which falls under my overall theme of finding your place within the world. It links to my other piece I did with watercolor as well because a similar techniques were used to blend the colors together. |
